Since it’s the middle of winter and can’t drive they cars for a while it’s time for a little maintenance. For my ‘32 Club Brougham what is the recommended gear oil for the rear end? Can’t imagine how old the oil is In there now. What should I use for the shocks? There was a post a few m9nths back on this but could not find it.

    Thanks

The first thing is to find out if there is any yellow metal in the differential or elsewhere where the oil may get to. Modern GL-5 gear oils will attack yellow metal and gradually erode them. I’ve no personal experience if this is true, but heard the tale of one Packard owner on a cross country trip who had a big problem which he attributed to using a GL-5. If I can find his comments, I’ll share them.

I’d say that if one has the choice it is advisable to use a GL-4 or earlier GL gear oil. I’ve used Sta-Lube GL-4. If your 32 Pierce has no yellow metal in the rear axle, then a modern gear oil like 85W-90 should be fine so long as your seals don’t leak.
